Farmer Andrew's Update

turkeysWe're still harvesting lettuce, leeks, arugula, mustard, spinach, kale, chard, beets, carrots, and herbs in the brisk fall weather.

We also have lots of local produce from Western Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. Apples are from Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury and our winter share members will be getting a gallon of their famous cider in their distribution this week.

The Winter/Spring Produce Co-Op is going very well. If you would like to sign up, please come in and do so. I had anticipated that we would have about 30 more members and have secured local organic produce to meet that demand.

We will have extra all natural Stonewood Farms turkeys on hand, but expect them to sell out. If you need a turkey, please come on Saturday or Sunday of this week to pick it up. Those who pre-ordered turkeys can pick theirs up beginning on Saturday as well. We will be closed on Monday the 23rd, but open on the 24th and 25th, right before Thanksgiving. Pies will be ready on the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

*For those of you interested in food and farming politics, check out this link to NPR's Talk of the Nation on Thursday. It was a show focusing on human trafficking and indentured survitude on Florida citrus and tomato farms.

Thanksgiving Items Available at the Farmstand

chutneyNew England Cranberry Company: Colonial Cranberry Sauce and Cranberry Chutney. Based in Lynn, Massachusetts, their first product, Colonial Cranberry Sauce, was developed using a recipe based in Colonial times -- well before additives and preservatives, and way before round cans at Thanksgiving became the way most people thought of cranberries. We like the chutney over brie!

olivias stuffing
Olivia's Traditional Stuffing comes to us from Vermont. It is made from a combination of French and Multi Grain breads and seasoned with lots of traditional poultry seasonings, all natural of course.

cornbread
Fiddler's Organic is a small company located in Maine. Referred to as corn pone by the American Indians, johnny cakes by soldiers in the Civil War, cornbread has been a frequent addition to the Thanksgiving table for decades.

pumpkin can
Farmer's Market Organic Pumpkin is rich, smooth and delicious, AND ready to use for everything from baked delights to savory center of the plate entrees. Use it in a variety of recipes including pies, muffins, cookies, soups...even chili!

Click here for their recipe for Traditional Pumpkin Pie

vtpie
Vermont Mystic Pie Company's package of two pie shells are located in our freezer and are made with butter and King Arthur Organic Flour. They have a great recipe for Bourbon Pecan Pie!

whipped cream

We love Natural By Nature's Brown Sugar and Classic Whipped Cream! Not only will it impress your guests, you will want to keep a container of it in your fridge at all times to put in your coffee and hot chocolate. It's organic and has a five month shelf life.

Food, Inc.: Saturday, December 5th from 1pm - 3pm

Hamilton -Wenham Green Presents the film, Food Inc. at the Hamilton-Wenham Library. Free!

Bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, tomatoes that won't go bad, you bet, along with new strains of E. coli and historic levels of obesity and diabetes particularly among children. Everyone should see this film.

Your 5-12 year-old kids will enjoy a supervised activity while you catch this season's most talked about food film.

Please reserve a spot for the kids' activity by visiting the Hamilton-Wenham Library's Children's Room or calling: 978-468-5577, ext. 13. Kid's spots reserved for the first 30 sign-ups. Younger children welcome if accompanied by a teen/adult caregiver.
