Farmer Andrew's Report
Love is in the air at the farm! Chelsea and Nate are going to be married next Saturday and had a small party today at the farm to celebrate.
Now that Labor Day has come and gone, some members think the growing season has ended. Keep in mind we are only in week 12 (out of 20), which means tons more veggies for you. The crops are now coming in at a record breaking amount. While your initial investment in the farm has been met, we are producing tons of bounty and want you to enjoy it!
WE NEED HELP! Potatoes need to be harvested, winter squash and pumpkins are baking in the fields, and the weeds are ruling the fields. Tomorrow at 1pm we are going to start harvesting the winter squash and pumpkins. If you'd like to join the crew for an afternoon, please come by to help us bring in this heavy harvest. We'll meet behind the stand.
The draught is starting to take a toll on the fall crops. We haven't had a measurable rainfall for over four weeks...and nothing is in the forecast. If you know a good rain dance, please start dancing. |

Elephant Wedding at the Farm!
If you didn't notice the front page of the Salem News or the Gloucester Times today, we thought we'd update you on the incredible wedding that took place here on Sunday, September 2nd. A very nice couple living in Cambridge emailed us this past winter asking if they could hold their wedding at the farm, and if they could bring an Elephant. Joanne Patton gave an enthusiastic thumbs up. The groom rode to the ceremony site atop "Minnie", an Asian Elephant . The barat, or Indian wedding procession included the groom's family and friends complete with traditional drumming. The bride, who happens to be Jewish, watched the barat from a small tent at the ceremony site. After the ceremony, the couple celebrated with family and friends in a large tent behind the farmstand. They gracefully incorporated both Indian and Jewish traditions throughout the evening. It was a beautiful day, and an amazing wedding! |

Event for Operation Troop Support
On Saturday, September 15th from 11am to 4pm, Green Meadows Farm invites Families of National Guard, Reserve and Active Duty Personnel now serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and Service members who have been deployed there and have returned (and their families) to the farm. We will offer hayrides, music and more in honor of their dedication to our country. New in the Farmstand: Mimi the Sardine Lunch Bags, Bibs and Aprons
Pia Andersson, mother of two daughters, started Mimi the Sardine in the late 80's. After designing and producing children's clothing for several major mail order companies including Hanna Andersson and Garnet Hill, the company now specializes in functional products made from eco-coated cotton fabrics directly imported from Sweden.
All of these items are manufactured in the San Francisco Bay Area. The fabrics are made from Swedish cotton prints that have been treated with an environmentally sound coating to make them permanently water and soil resistant. Just wipe and wear and machine wash as needed. They are produced in accordance with strict environmental laws and are Oeko-Tex certified; the coating is made from acrylic and not PVC. They use no chlorine in the production process, and only water soluble dyes. |
New This Week: Red Onions
We harvested red onions about three weeks ago, cured them in our greenhouse, and now their ready for distribution. This process will allow them to keep in a dark dry place for much longer than if we had distributed them fresh. Red onions are the best choice for salads, since they are much sweeter than yellow onions.
Here are some bits of onion trivia:
The name onion comes from the Latin, "unio" via the French "oignon" and the English "unyun." The onion plant belongs to the same family as the narcissus.
Onions and garlic have been cultivated for 6,000 years and have been credited with everything from making hair grow on bald heads to giving valor to the troops of Alexander the Great.
Onions are the vegetable which gave Chicago its name since the Chippewa Indians found these "she-gau-ga-winshe" growing at the site of the modern day city. Cucumber and Red Onion Salad
