Farmer Andrew's Report
Thanks to everyone who came and volunteered at the harvest festival. Special congratulations to Josh Massey for defending his title as pie eating champion (adult) and Cecilia's daughter, Helen for winning the childrens pie eating competition.
The nights are getting very cold which means tomato season is about over. The crew will do a clear harvest and have green tomatoes for distribution and we'll also clear peppers and eggplants.
In the next few weeks, we'll be sending out an email survey and encourage you all to respond, as we take your comments very seriously. |
| Winter Produce Share, 2008 CSA Sign Up and our Grocery Co-Op
Last year, with the help of several CSA members, we piloted a produce coop. For $35 per week, you'll recieve assorted Green Meadows produce (while it lasts) plus a great selection of organic fruit and vegetables from other farms. A sample share could include: Lettuce, spinach, potatoes, winter squash, tomatoes, onions, carrots, bananas, oranges and grapes. There are four 8-week sessions, beginning November 2nd and taking you right through the 2008 CSA, which begins the second week of June. Click here to download the Winter Share sign up form.
The 2008 CSA sign up is underway and we're thrilled to see so many members already signed up. Current members will have through the end of October to be guarenteed a spot in next year's CSA. The general public will be able to sign up after November 1st. One exciting new program we're adding is an opportunity for members to sponsor a lower income family for a week. This program was started with a $2000 pledge from generous member. We hope that other members will join in on this great program and we're also excited to add more diversity to our member base. The farm will also be donating a share to the HAWC shelter (Help for Abused Women and Children). Click here to download the 2008 CSA sign up form.
Finally, our Grocery Co-Op has been growing. Here are some features of Associated Buyers, our main distributor:
Many of the 6,500 products are sold by the piece so you can stretch your purchasing dollars and not get stuck with bulk quantities of food.
An extensive selection of products made by small New England vendors.
1,100 bulk food items, many of which can be broken down into smaller quantities.
A wide selection of imported and ethnic foods free of MSG, preservatives and artificial colors.
Gourmet, specialty and hand-crafted items of all types.
Vegetarian foods as well as organic and locally raised meats.
Click here for more information about our Grocery Co-Op, and to download a sign up form. |
New This Week: Purple Top Turnips
Turnips have been around a long time: they were enjoyed by Greek epicures (who favored those from Thebes) and by Roman gourmets (their turnips had to be from Amitermes). In one Roman dish, turnips were presented in sixteen different colors, though the favorite, by far, was purple. In the Orient, tender strips of turnip make a quick and delicious stir-fry. But no discussion of turnips is complete without due homage to the man they called "Turnip" Townshend, who, in the early 1700s, introduced a bevy of unknown Dutch turnip varieties to England. Although his efforts had beneficial effects on the way people thought about turnips, they also (unfortunately for "Turnip") changed the way people referred to the man who brought them. He had been known previously as "Lord" Townshend.
Storage Because of their high water content, turnips deteriorate quickly. Store, unwashed, in a plastic bag in the refrigerator up to 1 week.
Flavor Enhancers Lemon juice, vinegar, curry powder, chives, oregano, marjoram, thyme.
Nutritional Value Turnips contain potassium and iron and are a good source of vitamin C. 36 calories per cup
Basic Cooking Methods Cook in boiling salted water for 10 minutes. Steam for 12 minutes.
