Farmer Andrew's Report
We had a terrific time at the Exchange at the Wenham Tea House for the 2007 Sustainable Dinner. Thank you to everyone who attended. It was wonderful to enjoy our great produce with so many farm friends.
The season is winding down (still tons of veggies to harvest, though). The flower beds have been tilled under and tomatoes won't be around for too much longer.
CSA renewal forms will be available in the farmstand next week. We are asking for a $50 dollar deposit and the balance due after the holidays. If you are considering signing up again, please don't wait. Several members missed out on the CSA this year because they forgot to renew. Also remember that the livestock we raise sells out incredibly quickly (we'll be sold out for next year before the end of the month). We will also send out a year end survey and encourage you to send us your feedback so we can improve for the 2008 season. |

Thanksgiving Turkey Orders - Oct 10th
While our own turkeys are sold out, you can still get a great, all natural or organic turkey through the farm for Thanksgiving.
Stonewood Farm turkeys are naturally raised in Vermont without artificial growth hormones and antibiotics. These turkeys are $3.49 per pound. These turkeys are available from 16 to 30 pounds.
The organic turkeys are Grateful Harvest brand, and the turkeys have never been administered antibiotics or growth hormones, are raised without the use of animal by-products and are given certified organic vegetarian grain feed. Organic turkeys are $4.49 per pound, and range from 8 to 24 pounds.
To reserve your bird, please let us know what size you'd like. You can let us know the size range you'd prefer. We recommend about 2 pounds per person. A $20 deposit is required when you sign up. These fresh turkeys will be distributed the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Order deadline is October 10th.

New Crop This Week: Leeks
Just in time for potato distribution and cooler weather, Potato Leek Soup is one of the favorites of Farmer Andrew. Leeks are related to onions, garlic, scallions and chives. To clean, remove green tops within 2 inches of the white section. Peel off outside layer. Cut leek into half lengthwise and wash thoroughly under water to remove grit and soil.
Cooking Tips from the "Asparagus to Zucchini Cookbook"
- Steam or boil leeks for 10 - 12 minutes. Top with butter, a dash of salt, pepper and Parmesan cheese.
- Layer thin slices of leek in a favorite sandwich. Leek, tomato and melted cheese is a winner.
- Puree cooked leeks for a soup base.
- Add cooked leeks to mashed potatoes.
- Add leek leaves to long cooking dishes, such as grains, beans, or stews for added flavor.
- Lightly saute chopped leeks alone or with other vegetables.
