Farmer Andrew's Report
It's been very cold compared to the last few Decembers. The animals seem to be handling the weather well, though. The Pigs will be ready to go to market the second week of January so distribution will be held a couple weeks after that. We recently added another 100 laying hens and they are putting out a good amount of eggs. Other than taking care of the animals, Nate, Alia and I are doing forestry work, pruning blueberries and fixing machinery.
Please come by and visit the farm for lunch or attend one of our weekend events. We have hot soup and are open Wed - Sun from 9am - 5pm through Christmas. After Christmas we'll be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday until May. We have converted the greenhouse into a temporary, rustic "cafe" with picnic tables, so feel free to bring the kids for a snack while you shop.
As a special incentive to all 2007 and 2008 CSA Members, please visit the stand between now and January 1st for 10% off your bill. As an alternative, you may choose to have this discount donated to Cuvilly Arts and Earth Center in Ipswich. We have lots of great gifts from local artisans and from fair trade sources, so please think of us for those hard to find, unique holiday gifts. This special discount will end when the new year begins, so hurry in! |

Cooking Group with Cecilia
CSA member Cecilia Mullings has come up with a great way to use our farmstand kitchen. Here is some more information about what she's doing and how you can join in...
I am beginning to learn about the idea of community kitchens. They are used in a variety of ways, for a variety of purposes. My first approach in this exploration is to invite you to join me in the farm stand kitchen to prepare dinners that we will take home to serve to our families. The farm will sell us produce at wholesale prices, I will preorder the other ingredients, and the cost of the ingredients will be divided by those participating. There will also be a small per person fee paid to the farm.
I have a lot of experience in the food world and feel comfortable facilitating and guiding this process. But I am hoping to have a mix of experienced and inexperienced cooks around the prep table. I am expecting that weekday mornings might be best for many, but timing is flexible and weekend and evening times are options. The menu is flexible too and I am open to suggestions. I am hoping to have recipes that can be flexible enough to accommodate dietary restrictions (by making substitutions, by being able to add "culprit" ingredients at the end stage of the process, or having a few different prep stations) and include in-season produce available in the farm stand.
I have had a few practice runs. Twice we made soups and breads that actually provided 2 meals for each of our families. This past weekend we had two rounds of holiday cookie baking and decorating. One component we have instituted is a donation portion, meaning we make one more batch than we have participants and that extra batch is donated to a person or family in need either because of illness or other hardship.
If this sounds like something you are interested in please contact Cecilia at ceciliamullings@cs.com with your preferred gathering times and any dietary restrictions. If patterns emerge maybe we can coordinate classes with dietary needs. If you would like to explore uses of the community kitchen idea, I am happy to discuss that as well. | |
