Farmer Andrew's Update

yorkshire piglets
Please welcome the newest addition to the farm. Last Wednesday, we picked up four baby Yorkshire piglets. They are very cute and living across from the turkey yard (on the way to the raspberries and near the wood business). Colby Farm should have about a dozen Berkshires ready to come to Green Meadows by mid May.

Another exciting thing happening with our animals is the chickens are producing a record number of eggs these days. We've been getting over 100 eggs a day. This means that since we're only open three days a week, you're sure to get your fill of as many eggs as you'd like.

The field crew has been busy spreading compost, mulching & fertilizing berries, openning up the fields. Today we plan on seeding peas. If the weather cooperates, we'll have carrots, radishes, arrugula, mesclun, potatoes, and asian greens all seeded by the end of next week.

New in the Farmstand: salttower

Flavored Salts and Sugars, and Artisanal Pepper

We've already sold several of these beautiful flavored salt towers by Ipswich chef and entrepreneur, Didi Davis. Next to our registers, you'll find these plus a beautiful artisanal pepper collection, flavored sugars and a special smoked Viking salt.

An unique and practical gift, enjoy these flavors with all types of cooking. Each set somes with a recipe booklet, or you can check out her website for recipes and suggested uses.

Try slicing a very ripe (black) plantain, saute it in butter until brown, then sprinkle Didi Davis's Orange Ginger Sugar, or Vanilla Sugar at the end, just before serving.
sigg bottle Sigg Water Bottles

We're so excited about these beautiful water bottles, just in from Sigg. Made in Switzerland, these metal water bottles are available in a variety of sizes and come with either a screw off top, or a sports top. We have fun designs for kids and adults!

Taza chocolate sampled their organic chocolatestoneground, and had a very interesting display of the chocolate process from bean to bar. The Sommerville, MA based company is the only maker of 100% stone ground chocolate in the United States. Please visit their beautiful and informative website.

Panhandlers by Margo panhandler

Margo Lewis is the mother to Nate, the Assistant Farm Manager here at Green Meadows Farm. She describes her kitchen as her "comfort zone, and a very busy place;whether baking with the grandsons, putting-up preserves, or cooking fresh organic produce with the family Corgi underfoot."  She uses a lot of potholders and started Panhandlers by Margo a few years ago to keep herself, friends and family supplied. Using unique fabrics that remind her of fun in the garden and on the farm, or that just make her smile, each hand-made Panhandler is unique.

Special Presentation at ZUMI'S

Thursday, April 10th at 6:00pm

Come learn about the most marginalized people of Nepal and how one woman has pioneered important foundations for change to improve their harsh lives. This is the true essence of grassroots improvements that lead to opportunity and fairness in the most unfair circumstances imaginable.

Founder of EDWON -

Empower Dalit Women of Nepal

www.edwon.org

Bishnu Maya Pariyar is a young woman from the Dalit "untouchable" caste in Nepal. Dalits are among Nepal's poorest and most disenfranchised people. At age 20 she founded Empower Dalit Women of Nepal (EDWON), a human rights organization for Dalit women. EDWON facilitates self help groups for women across caste lines, empowering them socially and economically.

Through literacy training and savings groups, women start small business enterprises. United across caste lines and with newfound independence from their husbands, they become catalysts for social change and effectively stand up against domestic violence and caste discrimination, while raising their standard of living.

Visit Zumi's at 40 Market Street in Ipswich or call them at 978-356-1988 for more information. Their terrific coffee is 100% Fair Trade and Organic.
