We've been busy at work, making a quilt which will be raffled off this Spring! The proceeds from the raffle will go directly to our low-income share fund. The quilt is now all pieced together and we're looking forward to completing the final touches so it can be hung and raffle tickets can be sold. | |

Farmer Andrew's Update
Spring has started on the farm! The five pregnant ewes which are now living in one of our greenhouses have started giving birth. Margaret gave birth to Maud and Martha (the picture above is Margaret with Maud) Wednesday afternoon at 5 and Etta Mae gave birth to Eunis and Emma at around 10 last night. Can you believe it...all girls! I was hoping for as many girls as possible as they will become part of our breeding flock instead of freezer lambs. Special thanks to Brad, Kim, Robin and Shirley for staying late to help with the lambing.
We recently posted a short film on our website titled, "Meet the Sheep". In it, you'll see Robin O'Neil, our farm educator and a talented crew member, explain to my son Anson how to be calm around the sheep. This was important because we need the sheep to be more comfortable around people in case we need to help them through the birthing process. The crew has been holding a "March Madness" betting pool to see who will give birth first, and which sheep might have twins.
We're going to keep the lambs and moms away from the public for a few days. Next weekend, though, we'll invite people to come meet the new members of our flock. Come by for "Look at the Lambs" on Saturday, March 21st from 10am - Noon right behind the farmstand.
I've had some terrific feedback about our meat chickens. They do taste different than traditional breeds. Their dark meat is darker, and there's more of it in relation to breast meat. The stock made from these chickens is the deepest yellow I've ever seen. This is what we have been using for Amy's soups in the farmstand. For those looking for a more "traditional" tasting chicken, we will continue to stock fresh chickens in the farmstand from Free Bird, an all natural chicken from Pennsylvania.
A new delivery of chicks has arrived and they're peeping away in the greenhouse. We will be holding a "Meet the Baby Chicks" event this Saturday from 10am - Noon in the farmstand greenhouse. Come by for a visit!
In the greenhouse, we've seeded onions and they've already popped up. Greenhouse tomatoes have their first true leaves, and herbs have been seeded. We received 400 chicks from a breeder in Iowa. These birds are to replace the older layers and they should start laying in July.
Business has been very good at the farmstand now that spring is just around the corner. Our CSA is sold out with approximately 300 people on the wait list. For those of you who have not paid yet, please do so in the next week. If you have not received a bill, please call our farm office at 978-468-3720. |
