| Farmer Andrew's Update
We have been pretty chilly here at the farm, but the animals have been keeping nice and warm. The sheep have moved from the farm down the street, back to one of our greenhouses. I think all the ewes are pregnant, but one. The sheep enjoy going for a morning walk to stretch their legs and get fresh air. I tend to take them over to the pasture by the raspberries.
The chickens keep producing lots of eggs, but luckily we seem to be meeting the demands of our customers. The photo to the right is of our new ducklings, playing in the snow. They are called Khaki Cambells and we hope to have duck eggs available for sale in the farmstand any day now.
The next session of the Winter Share begins on March 5th. There are spaces left in this 15-week winter share, which will take customers right up to the first week of CSA distributions. For $40 per week, session two Winter Share members receive approximately $50 worth of fruit, salad greens, braising greens and vegetables. Click here to download the sign up form.
The 2010 CSA is filling up quickly. We do still have spaces left, but please act fast, as we expect to sell out. If you are a past member who has not yet signed up, you must do so now. Once we're full, we will need to start another wait list. Click here to download the sign up form. Full payment is due with the form. One exciting change for next season's CSA share is we are contracting with two amazing growers, Jenny & Bruce Wooster (they were the growers who started the CSA at Appleton). Jenny and Bruce are going to grow melons and sweet potatoes (crops I have not had much success with) and we are going to offer these crops, plus a few more, as part of the CSA share.
Many people have been asking about fruit and meat shares for 2010. The fruit share sign ups will happen in the spring. For meat, we will only be offering Pork shares this season. We will be taking Pork share sign ups in the spring as well, look for more information in "The Cultivator".
In the farmstand, we've been selling lots of our own soups, scones, muffins and cookies. Look for special Valentine's Day cookies and other treats, made in house with real sugar, and no trans fats or preservatives. We also have been pleased with the feedback from the grass-fed beef from Miles Smith farm and will be getting another lot this week. |

Winter Vacation Farm School
Some spaces are still left for our winter Farm School. We will also be offering an April Break Farm School. Check our website for farm school updates.
Come to Vacation Farm School at Green Meadows and see what animals do all winter (and what farmers do, too). We will check out the greenhouses, gather eggs and learn what farmers do to keep fresh, unfrozen drinking water for all our livestock. You will need warm clothes and boots, of course.
Thursday, February 18th from 9-10 am, 3-5 year olds, $10 per child
Friday, February 19th from 9-10am, 6 - 11 year olds, $10 per child
Please call our farm office at 978-468-3720 to sign up, or visit the farmstand.
The Summer 2010 Farm School fllyer is now printed and available in the farmstand. These classes fill up quickly, so come by and register your 3 - 10 year old for summer fun at the farm. It will be posted on our website within the next few days as well. |

2010 Quilt for Hunger - Update
We're busy at work quilting this year's theme: VEGETABLES. There is still time to get in on the fun. If you would like to quilt a square, stop by the farmstand this weekend for the quilting instructions. You may choose any vegetable you like, as long as it fits on a washable 16" x 16" square. Please email us if you have specific questions, and Robin O'Neil will be in touch. You may be looking for something fun and creative to do about now. It is time for our Second Annual Green Meadows Farm Quilt. You don't have to have a sewing machine or even know how to thread a needle. All our efforts are going for a good cause - we will raffle the quilt to raise money for a CSA share for needy families. When the drawing is done, you may be the winner of our handsome efforts! Everyone is welcome - bring a friend, bring a thimble, bring a willing quilter.

Ask Robin Collumn. Dear Robin,
Do hens need a rooster to be able to lay eggs? How often does a chicken lay an egg? How many years are chickens able to lay eggs?
Yours truly,
Chicken Little
Dear Chick,
Your questions are very good and I hear them a lot. Chickens can lay eggs with or without a rooster around. We keep roosters at Green Meadows Farm mainly to try to scare off other animals that might harm the hens, like hawks or weaseles. Chickens usually lay about one egg a day, depending on how much daylight they get. In the winter, their egg production does decrease because the days are shorter. Our chickens usually begin laying eggs when they are about five months old, and continue producing eggs until they are four years old.
Yours truly,
Robin Do you have a question for Robin? If so, email us at organicfarmer@comcast.net
